06 Feb 20.08. – Matchu Lopes from Cape Verde wins the Strapless Freestyle competition
The first winner of the Mercedes-Benz Kitesurf World Cup is fix: Matchu Lopes from Cape Verde showed an excellent performance in the Strapless Freestyle final against Airton Cozzolini and became champion of Fehmarn. With this victory, the 23 years old get important ranking point for the GKA World Tour. Paulino Pereira from Portugal ended um third.
“I am very happy about my result. Airton and I had a great day on the water. Defeat him is very difficult. We grow up together, live in the same village and train together every day. We are like brothers. I had a lot of fun on the water and the crowd pushed me to my best performance”, Lopes said.
During good wind conditions and sunshine, thousands of visitors have seen a lot of action on the water and a spectacular final. The only German participator couldn’t make it over the first round.
In the afternoon, the first races of the HydroFoil Pro Tour started. A wing-like lengthening under the board lifts the athletes out of the water. Because of the less resistance, the foiler fly over the water and can reach a high speed of 70 km/h. The best German racer is Florian Gruber from Garmisch-Partenkirchen.
After the first the heats, Nicola Parlier from France takes the lead ahead of his countryman Axel Mazella. Florian Gruber stays on the 4th place and had a good position to make it to the podium.
The Hydrofoil Pro Tour (no official world cup competition of the Mercedes-Benz Kitesurf World Cup) will end up on Wednesday. The 31 competitors can ride up to twelve heats. Tomorrow we will have some more races.
